April 2004 - Congratulations to the winners of the Cape Town Student Bursary Competition

Joe Fox (Edinburgh), Yuni Krisnandi (Abderdeen) and Misbah Sarwar (Royal Institution) were the winners of our student bursary competition, each receiving £500 travel funds to attend the International Zeolite Conference in Cape Town.

Entrants had to write a "New Scientist"-style account of their research work, with each of the three winners producing excellent, and highly readable articles. These can now be read online by following the links below.

BZA 2001 Meeting and Workshop on Nanocomposite Porous Materials

The 24th Annual Meeting of the BZA, was held in April 2001 at St Martin's College, Ambleside. This was followed by a three-day workshop examining the latest developments in the burgeoning field of nanocomposite porous materials. Both events were well-attended and attracted speakers and delegates from around the world. A more detailed appreciation of these conferences will appear in due course

ZMPC 2000 meeting

The ZMPC 2000 meeting, organised by the Japan Association of Zeolite, took place in Sendai, Japan from 6-9 August. Over 400 delegates attended, mainly from the Asia-Pacific region but with representatives from a wide range of other countries, including 9 from the UK. BZA Chairman Mike Anderson delivered a plenary lecture on zeolite crystal growth, including his latest work using atomic force microscopy. Other highlights included a lecture by Francois Fajula on catalysis by mesoporous materials and a review by IZA president Jens Weitkamp of the burgeoning field of base catalysis. Delegates were also treated to very interesting lectures from two rival groups in the rapidly developing area of combinatorial materials synthesis (both speakers being expat Brits). We are grateful to Profs Terasaki and Miyamoto for their hospitable and efficient organisation.

A packed audience for Professor Anderson's lecture at ZMPC 2000, Sendai, Japan, 8 Aug 2000
