2011 Founders' Award Winner

The inaugural BZA Founders' Award has been won by James Paterson, who completed his Ph.D at Southampton Univerisity under the supervison of Dr Robert Raja.
His thesis is entitled “Exploitation of synergy in oxidation catalysis with bimetallic aluminophosphate catalysts".

James was presented with his award at the BZA annual conference in Edinburgh, April 2011 (below)

Announcing the New Founders' Award

The New Founders' Award is an annual award for UK based postgraduate student working in the area of micro or mesoporous science. It aims to celebrate the best/most promising postgraduate scientist of the year. The Award will be presented each year at the BZA Annual Meeting and has been devised in honour of the late Lovat Rees, one of the founding members of the British Zeolite Association and one of the father figures of British zeolite science.

The Award will consist of a trophy (Founders' Cup) and a cash prize. A scientific committee consisting of both academic and industrial scientists will assess each application. In the event of a draw between candidates, the assessors may use a short telephone interview to determine the overall winner. The award will be announced prior to the BZA conference to allow the winner a reasonable amount of time to arrange their attendance at the conference to receive their award.

16th International Zeolite Conference

The 16th International Zeolite Conference was held in Sorrento, Italy from 4-9 July 2010. As usual, there was a strong UK attendance (pictures to follow!)

2008 Barrer Prize

The 2008 Barrer Prize was awarded to Dr Ben Slater of University College London.

Distinguished for his innovative contributions to the development and application of computer modelling techniques to the science of microporous materials, especially relating to the surface properties of these materials and to the mechanisms of crystal growth.

4th FEZA Conference

The 4th FEZA Conference was held at the College de France, Paris, France, from 2-6 September 2008.

BZA 2008 Keele

The 31st Annual Conference of the BZA was held at The University of Keele, from 31 March to 2 April 2008.

Thanks to Dr Vladimir Zholobenko for for a memorable and stimulating conference.

Founders Award Announced

In honour of Prof. LVC Rees, a BZA Founders' Award will be presented to an outstanding contributor to zeolite or nanomaterials science. The award will be given every three years and is a cash prize of £300.

The award will be given to outstanding scientists in the area of zeolite chemistry and will be based on the PhD thesis, the CV papers and/or patents.

Scientists under the age of 30 can apply. The award is for a British citizen or a non UK citizen with at least two years of employment working in the relevant research field within the UK.
For application send a CV, a description of the work and copies of three relevant papers to the BZA chairman (Dr. Paul Wright, University of St Andrews.)

The deadline for the 2008 award is 18th of February 2008.

Congratulations to the winners of the Prague Student Bursary Competition

Dapo Odunlade (Manchester), Dervishe Salih (Royal Institution), Miguel Mora Fonz (UCL) and Emily Parham (St Andrews) were the winners of our student bursary competition, each receiving £300 travel funds to attend the FEZA Zeolite Conference in Prague, which took place in August 2005. A stimulating and enjoyable time was had by all.

Entrants had to write a "New Scientist"-style account of their research work, with each of the winners producing excellent, and highly readable articles (see below)

Dapo Odunlade Can Environmental Protection save Millions?
Dervishe Salih The building blocks of crystals
Miguel Mora Fonz The role of solvation and pH in zeoilte nucleation
Emily Parham Environmentally friendly solvents template 3D honeycomb materials
